• Assurant Takes Steps to Reduce Energy Consumption, One Kilowatt at a Time

    A multitude of small activities to reduce power use can add up. Combine those efforts with some solar power and the results are significant energy savings. The solar power produced at Assurant Specialty Property's campus in Springfield translates to a reduction of more than 1,400 tons of carbon dioxide. This is the equivalent of planting more than 33,000 trees. The 1.76 megawatt project is the largest solar installation in the Springfield-Dayton area.

    A Message to Our Shareholders: Assurant’s net earned premiums, fees and other income were $8.3 billion in 2013, an 8.2 percent increase from the previous year. Net operating income was $466.5 million, also a year-over-year improvement. Operating return on equity, excluding accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) was 10.6 percent. Our book value per diluted share, excluding AOCI(3), was up 10.4 percent – marking our third consecutive year of double-digit growth.

  • Assurant Marks 10-Year IPO Anniversary

    Assurant marked the 10-year anniversary of its initial public offering and trading on the New York Stock Exchange as AIZ on Feb. 5, 2014. The company’s IPO was the first billion-dollar initial public offering in 2004 at $1.76 billion and was the fourth largest that year. At that time, Fortis Insurance N.V., the U.S. subsidiary of the Dutch-Belgian Fortis group, held an IPO of some 80 million shares of Assurant stock.  The move was the first step in the total divestiture of Fortis' U.S. insurance operations.   Assurant’s storied history actually begins more than 120 years ago.

The students were eager to meet face-to-face with the mentors who had provided them insights about the business world over email during the past eight weeks. For many, this also was the first time they visited an office setting. During the program, students send weekly emails posing questions that focus on themes such as education, technology and leadership.
